The Need for Mitt Magic

Sarah Cox receiving WA

Inventor of the Year Schools

Competition 2006 award at

Parliament House

The reason I developed this invention was because my mum often burns herself when taking cakes, biscuits etc out of the oven. The reason for this is because oven gloves are short and don’t protect the upper arm from burns. I looked up on the internet and found that 6000 children a year in Australia are admitted to hospital with burns. Half of all burns to children occur in the kitchen and some of these were from oven related burns.

I also enjoy cooking and I find that the oven gloves are designed for large adult hands and don’t fit me very well. I wanted to develop an oven glove that: fits child sized hands; and covered the upper arm.

I often find that when I am about to take a cake out of the oven, I can’t find the cake skewer/tester. I wanted to incorporate a pocket for the skewer into my oven glove so that I can find it easily.

I researched oven gloves on the internet and found that the only oven gloves available for children were for play only and were not heat resistant.

Mitt Magic can be used when taking things out of the oven or microwave, when using the Barbeque, and when cooking in a camp fire.

The Competition
I was a finalist in the WA Inventor of the Year Schools Competition 2006. The Minister for Energy; Resources; Industry & Enterprise, Hon Francis Logan MLA, presented me with the award at Parliament House, Perth, Australia. As a result of this many people encouraged me to have my product manufactured as there seemed to be a need for this unique product.
